The Cardinals played extraordinary baseball at the Beast Of The East Tournament in West Virginia. Out of the 36 teams invited, they made it to the championship game, but unfortunately finished as the runner up. The team played with intensity throughout the entire tournament. It was extremely hot and humid on many of the days, but each player continued to push himself to the limit. Everyone contributed to the outstanding performance.
The tournament MVP had to have been Ron Hamilton. He hit a team high .609 with 14 hits and 10 RBI's, including two doubles, a homerun, and a .826 slugging percentage. Hamilton also throw a two-hit shutout against the tournament favorite JL Clevelanders on Sunday. He got the win in the Cardinals first victory and picked up a save against a tough Andy's 49er team.
Adam Kipling came up big for the Cardinals on several different occasions with two outs and important runners on base. He hit .423 with 11 hits and 10 RBI's. He also pitched an outstanding game against Somerset, PA. to pick up a huge win for the Cardinals.
A true warrior behind the plate, Rich Yantos caught every game for the Cardinals, including three on the final day in 90 +degree temperatures. He not only did superb defensively, he also hit .300 and was second on the team behind Kipling and Hamilton in RBI's.
Kevin Hebel battled through tough temperatures and even tougher hitters to get the Cardinals a victory against last years division winners, Andy 49er's. He then came back on Sunday and gave everything he had to help the Cardinals secure a spot in the Championship game by beating the Indy17's with a score of 9-3.
Not only did Anthony Mangione have the only RBI in the Cardinals 1-0 victory over the JL Clevelanders but he also did an incredible job shutting down a good hitting Manhasset, PA. team. Mangione gave up only two runs on four hits and the Cards offense put up 10 runs to give them a 5 inning mercy win.
Pat Chilton and Bryan McGann provided the Cardinals offense with a terrific one- two punch. Each hit over .300 and led the team in runs scored with 8.
Dan Meaney contributed with valuable innings on the hill, and he and Matt Muurisepp drove in and scored what proved a valuable runs for the Cardinals.
In a tournament that featured teams with outstanding competition and opportunities to impress college coaches and scouts, the NY Smithtown Cardinals did not disappoint. They were called "the class of the tournament", by several tournament organizers, parents and fans. Coach Sean Lynch says this is not only a tribute to the organization but also to the outstanding players that went on this trip. He feels fortunate to have coached such fine young man. They showed tremoundous heart, leadership, passion, respect, and love for the game. It was an experience no one will soon forget.
